Liberal Zionists defending the indefensible
I’ve got a short piece out on the blog of Identities, the academic journal of racial, ethnic, national, transnational and postcolonial identities in the contemporary world. It takes Jonathan Freedland’s ‘verbatim’ documentary play Jews. In Their Own Words (Royal Court, 2022) as an example of liberal Zionist culture in the UK. I analyse the play as an example of liberal anti-antisemitism, which is characterised, I argue, by the offer of plausibly deniable support for Israel, even in the face of the genocidal actions of the Israeli state in Gaza. Liberal Zionism, I therefore propose, is trapped in the defence of the indefensible. You can read the piece here.
